Every two years it causes abdominal pain, the technical inspection of your vehicle legally required. The older it is, the worse the expectations are. But if you prepare in time for the technical inspection, you can pass it without any problems. So it's not just a question of passing the test "once in a while", but rather of understanding why it is so important to comply with the various test parameters and what the consequences are if you can't comply. Among the parts that are tested are of course the tires that need to be checked. With the only link between the road and the car, there are of course a few things to take into account. But why is this so? In order to better understand why such strict rules are imposed on the tires of your car.
Why are tires prohibited from being used if they fall below the minimum tread depth of 1.6 millimeters?
Every tire has certain driving characteristics that result from the interaction between the rubber compound and the tread design of the tire. Over time, the tread wears down and the properties deteriorate. For example, braking distance increases and hydroplaning protection is lost, and lateral guidance is lost. Renowned automobile clubs recommend replacing summer tires at three millimeters and winter tires even at four millimeters.
What are the consequences if the tires have worn unevenly?
As a result, tire vibration and noise will increase. It is also possible that the tire may twist in a certain direction. Uneven wear can be a sign of tracking errors or incorrect air pressure.
Do the size and designation of the tires match the information on the vehicle papers?
This point is a bit out of date, because in new vehicle papers, only one tire size is always indicated, but several sizes are still allowed when driving. The information regarding the correct size for your car can be found in the so-called "CoC" document, which is part of the vehicle documents and can be requested from the brand dealer in case of loss. If you drive with other tire sizes, the inspector will complain and your car's general operating permit will expire. Your insurance coverage will therefore lapse. In addition, improper tires will prevent driving characteristics from developing to their full potential.
Tires are mounted in the direction of travel: be careful
Many of the tires available on the market are directional. They can be recognized by an arrow on the sidewall of the tire. When mounting, the arrow must point forward. Incorrect mounting does not enhance the tire's good operating characteristics. Directional tires are very quiet and have a better grip on dry roads, and they are also a pleasure to the eye.
Do not drive if your tire shows minor damage: why?
At first, a small scratch seems unimportant, but it can have fatal consequences because moisture enters the tire through the tread cuts. This causes the carcass to decompose and weaken. Often, the tire's tread will come off as a result. That is why the tire should be replaced as soon as possible in case of damage.
Is a small rim damaged? And what does it actually mean that the rims must be securely fastened?
A damaged rim should not be pushed aside like this. An inspection in the workshop is absolutely necessary, as larger damage can lead to problems or even the total loss of control of your car. Fastening to tires means that the rims can only be mounted with the bolts specified by the manufacturer. The use of other bolts seems safe, but after a longer driving time, these bolts will loosen and are not a secure attachment for the rim.
In the end, the tire check should be carried out not only every two years shortly before the technical inspection, but also on a regular basis, so as not to endanger your safety and that of other road users.
